Black Friday 2014 deals spark shopping frenzy as bargain hunters swarm stores–( We are what we consume?)

“The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men.” (Psalm 12:8).

As he saw it, people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think. (Neil Postman)

What happens to a nation whose elites laugh at its citizens?

What happens to its elites?   (Peggy Noonan)

No one wants to be the earnest outsider now, no one wants to play the sober steward, no one wants to be the grind, the guy carrying around a cross of dignity. No one wants to be accused of being staid. No one wants to say, “This isn’t good for the country, and it isn’t good for our profession.”

And it is all about the behavior of our elites, our upper classes, which we define now in a practical sense as those who are successful, affluent and powerful. This group not only includes but is almost limited to our political class, Wall Street, and the media, from Hollywood to the news divisions.

They’re all kind of running America.

They all seem increasingly decadent.

What are the implications of this, do you think?

They’re making their videos, holding their parties and having a ball. OK. But imagine you’re a Citizen at Home just grinding through—trying to do it all, the job, the parenthood, the mowing the lawn and paying the taxes. No glamour, all responsibility and effort. And you see these little clips on the Net where the wealthy sing about how great taxpayer bailouts are and you feel like . . . they’re laughing at you.

What happens to a nation whose elites laugh at its citizens?

What happens to its elites?

We are not what we eat, we are are only partially what we consume, but we most definitely are how we consume; degraded, mindless sheep directed and manipulated by a laughing elite. Orwellian, Huxleyan very likely apt, but worse, for we devour our own self-respect, our own individual sovereignty in a mass, well orchestrated miasma of soulless, grotesque consumption directed by a system whose power elites are the only beneficiaries. And they laugh. They laugh at the stupidity of it. They laugh at the emotional energy drained away from the people stampeding conveniently between the Thursday and weekend football games so there is nothing left for rage where it should be focused, against the systematic looting of our nation. The elites are laughing. They have been for many years. Black Friday is America.

NEW YORK — Black Friday was already well underway before many awoke this morning.

The traditional kickoff to the holiday shopping season has become a two-day affair, with more stores opening before people put down their turkey legs on Thanksgiving in the U.S. There’s good reason for the creep; businesses know shoppers will only spend so much, and they want the first crack at those holiday budgets.

Still, millions of Americans and hordes of Canadians and Britons are expected to head out in search of steep discounts today. The National Retail Federation forecasts holiday sales will grow 4.1% to $616.9 billion in the U.S. — the biggest jump since 2011.

It’s a make-or-break time for many retailers, which on average get 20% of their annual sales during the holiday shopping season. Already, retailers have resorted to steep discounting to lure shoppers.

Here’s a look at what’s happening this Black Friday.

In Canada, one of the country’s largest shopping mall operators, Cadillac Fairview, has responded to retailer requests by opening 21 properties early on Friday so it can lure customers who might be tempted to go south for deep discounts. Cadillac Fairview’s Eaton Centre in Toronto — the busiest mall in Canada — will open at 6 a.m. Friday, while other properties across the country will welcome customers through the doors at either 7 a.m. or 8 a.m.

Zero Respect for Thanksgiving and Black Friday Shoppers | SPLICETODAY.com

The past two Black Fridays have kept me from my loved ones so that others are able to save 50 cents to a dollar on box sets of their favorite TV shows. Instead, I ate cold Chinese food alone on the couch and watched reruns of Parenthood. While myself and countless other underpaid and overworked customer service workers, were toiling, those fortunate enough to have the Thanksgiving holiday off were gearing up to feed into the myth that is Black Friday. Some will say that if I hate working on Thanksgiving and Black Friday so much that I should find another job. This is such a flippant retort to everyone who must work in order to keep his or her jobs. Do people honestly think that anyone would choose to make lattes or ring up your $1000 clothing purchase instead of gathering around a table with those they hold dear? What’s even worse about Black Friday culture is that contrary to popular opinion, Black Friday no longer refers to the mega-profit stores that took them out of the red and into the black.

Now, stores aren’t even waiting till Friday, opting to open later on during Thanksgiving Day. Long before workers have had time to digest their meals, they’re forced back to jobs because people cannot stand the idea of not being able to spend money for a full 24 hours. “Gray Thursday,” as it’s now called by retail market, is when stores such as Target re-open at five p.m. Thanksgiving Day so that people can get a leg up on their Black Friday shopping. “Cyber Monday” has also put a damper on the number of those turning out for Black Friday door buster deals because people are realizing they can get better deals sitting at home than they will from waiting out in the cold for Wal-Mart to open.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (November 28, 2014) – Two people were arrested after a brawl on Black Friday at a northwest side mall.

The incident happened around 3 a.m. in the 51100 block of Pike Plaza Rd. According to police, a male was too rowdy inside of the mall, and he was thrown out. The man then got in a fight with another man outside in the parking lot. The officers working security detail didn’t see the fight, but they saw the victim’s bloody nose. An off-duty officer told the suspect to leave. The suspect refused to leave and he started punching the off-duty officer in the jaw. The suspect’s girlfriend then showed up and also started hitting the off-duty office. Both the male suspect and his girlfriend were arrested.

The officer was not hurt.

Why Black Friday Is a Behavioral Economist’s Nightmare

There are many, many reasons not to participate in Black Friday. Maybe you like sleeping in and spending time with family more than lining up in a mall parking lot at 2 a.m. Maybe you object on humanitarian grounds to the ever-earlier opening times, which force employees of big-box retailers to cut their holidays short by reporting to work in the middle of the night. (Or, increasingly, on Thanksgiving itself.)

But among the most potent reasons no sane person should participate in Black Friday is this: It is carefully designed to make you behave like an idiot.
